Sissy J's Poochies Baby Basics

Vaccines:

We give a Parvo or a 5 way vaccine NO 7 way as shown below, we do not add the Leptospirosis and Corona.
We do not feel it necessary for inside house puppies.  Check with your vet as to their practice, if they use Lepto and Corona remind them tiny breed puppies can and do have severe adverse reactions even to death.  Benadryl is used for allergic reactions.
Many breeder's and families have said when the pup received Lepto and Corona it caused major illness and even death in the small breed dogs due to negative reaction to the vaccine.

We start our puppy shots at 8 weeks, our schedule is 8, 10, 13 weeks for 5 way puppy vaccines.
Rabies vaccine is given at 16 weeks and again 1 year later with a 3 year rabies vaccine.
All puppies come with their first shot and has been wormed at 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks.
Keep in mind and do your research on vaccines as they are finding with new research vaccines are lasting 3 to 7 years after the dogs have had all puppy shots and rabies and bostered at 1 year.  We want our babies protected but not overdosed!!

"D": Distemper.
The leading cause of death in dogs. Distemper is a contagious disease of the intestinal tract & respiratory system that eventually spreads to the brain. There is no treatment for Distemper, but supportive therapy can help some side effects.

"A": Adenovirus. There are two strains of Adenovirus: hepatitis (type 1), which is a disease of the liver, and respiratory (type 2), which can contribute to Kennel Cough. Adenovirus type 2 is used to make vaccines, and it protects against both strains.

"P": Parainfluenza.
This respiratory disease is one of the culprits of canine Bronchitis, or Kennel Cough, which causes a dry hacking cough that can last for weeks. Parainfluenza is easily spread, especially when dogs are in close confinement.

"PV", "Pv", "CPV": Canine Parvovirus.
This is a highly contagious disease of the intestinal tract. It also progresses quickly, so death is very common. There is no direct treatment for Parvo, but supportive therapy may help some of the side effects.

"CV", "CVK": Coronavirus.
Puppies are at the greatest risk for this intestinal disease, which causes severe diarrhea and sometimes death. As with other viruses, there is no specific treatment, but supportive therapy can alleviate the side effects.

"L", "4L": Leptospirosis.
A bacterial disease in the liver and kidneys.  There are four prominent subtypes (or serovars) of Lepto, and one serovar will not cover the rest. Some puppy vaccines protect against the two most common serovars, while others protect against all four.  Not all dogs should receive the Lepto vaccine, so talk to your veterinarian first

Rabies:

A Rabies shot should be given at sixteen weeks of age by your vet, booster a year later, and every one to three years after that.

Lyme Disease:

Spread by ticks, immunization is given as an initial series of two injections three weeks apart followed by an annual booster.

Bordetella:

Required by most kennels and many groomers.
For dogs that don't need year round protection, the best time to administer the vaccine is two to four weeks before going to the kennel or groomers, check with your veterinary office for their practice.

Worms: By Web MD, you will find a link available below

Roundworms:

Usually spread in feces or during pregnancy or nursing, the roundworm causes a serious infection in dogs and puppies.  The roundworm eats the food of its host and may cause diarrhea  and other symptoms. In puppies, roundworms can be fatal.  Prescription and over-the-counter deworming products for dogs are very effective.  If people contract roundworms, their symptoms can be even more serious than those in dogs.

Hookworms:
Living mainly in the small intestine, hookworms suck the blood of their hosts.  Puppies can become infected from their mothers.  Adult dogs can be infected through their skin or when cleaning themselves.  Infection causes weakness and malnutrition and can lead to death in puppies.  Two rounds of deworming medication are usually effective, but a puppy may need other treatment, as well.  Humans can also become infected with hookworms from unwashed vegetables or by walking barefoot on sand and soil.

Heartworms:

Heartworms are spread to dogs through mosquito bites.  Up to 14 inches long, a heartworm lives in the heart and the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the lungs.  Heartworms affect how the heart functions and how blood clots and is likely to cause death if untreated.  Monthly heartworm preventives are effective.  If infected, your dog may cough, have trouble breathing, and experience other symptoms.  Treatment may involve two or three injections of arsenic-based drugs, followed by at least a month of rest.

Whipworms:

Whipworms live in the area where the small and large intestines meet. Here, they suck the blood of their hosts. Dogs can pick them up from contaminated soil or by grooming. Whipworms can be quite serious and cause bloody diarrhea when there are large numbers embed in the intestine. Some heartworm preventives are effective against whipworms, and an oral dewormer is effective at eliminating whipworms.

Tapeworms:
Dogs get tapeworms from licking themselves and swallowing fleas, which carry them.  Tapeworms absorb some of the dog’s nutrients from the intestine where they attach.  The tapeworm is made up of small segments, each about the size of a grain of rice.  These are passed in feces and can sometimes be seen around the dog’s anus.  An injection or tablet can kill tapeworms.  Humans can also get tapeworms, but people don't get them from an infected pet.

Ringworm:
Despite its name, ringworm is not a worm at all.  It is a skin infection caused by a fungus.  In dogs, ringworm often presents as a dry, gray, scaly patch, although it may cause no symptoms at all.  In people, it forms a round, red lesion with a ring-like appearance.  Dogs pick up ringworm when their skin comes into contact with the spores of the fungus.  Spores are commonly found in the soil or on cats.  The spores can be present on a cat even when it shows no symptoms.  People can catch it by touching an infected pet.  Treatment for ringworm in dogs may involve medicated dips, shampoos, or ointments.  Your dog may also need oral medication for one to two months.  You may need to take other measures to clear ringworm from the environment or prevent its spread.
